After high school, The Drevlow went on to
b.s. his way to a B.S. in English Education from UW-Superior,
then slogged his way to an MFA at Minnesota State University,
Mankato. Between that time, there were a lot of odd jobs,
coaching basketball, giving boat tours, catering, cooking,
substitute teaching, grading standardized tests, among others,
and still, sadly, The Drevlow stands as the only man in his
family not to have lost a finger—just a lot of
semi-serious, yet non-lethal injuries.

Today, The Drevlow teaches
at Georgia Southern University, by way of the University of
Wisconsin-Whitewater and Grand Valley State University. His
first book of fiction, a collection of short stories called Bend with the Knees and Other Love Advice from
My Father won the 2006 Many Voices Project
and was published by New Rivers Press in the fall of 2008.
Highly autobiographical, yet fictional, the connected short
stories blur the line between memoir and short story and
revolve around Benny Drevlow's growing up on a farm in Northern
Wisconsin and dealing with the suicide of his oldest brother,
his house catching on fire three times, along with a number of
other strange and not all together adaptive fixations,
neuroses, and obsessions. The collection has been called
"harsh, raw, desperate, smart-ass, smooth, fast, and frequently
hilarious" and hopefully, that's true, but you should see for
yourself. |
